his year, Exeter independent performing arts school Stage by Stage Academy celebrates 20 years of making dreams come true for hundreds of


aspiring young performers. Situated in Bartholomew Street West,


it has notched up over 100 productions starring its students, which have delighted audiences in Exeter, Edinburgh, London and around the UK. Ian Trafford, who runs Stage by Stage


with his wife Tanya, explains: “Central to the Stage by Stage method are the numerous fully-produced shows we mount each year. We’ve presented everything from The Tempest and Under Milk Wood to The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe and Beauty And The Beast at Exeter Northcott Theatre, and Children of Eden in London’s West End. Senior students also perform at the Edinburgh Festival where shows have included Little Shop Of Horrors, Sweeney Todd and Cabaret which was invited to open the Best Of The Fest Gala.”

The emphasis is on vocational training, although all of the various activities at the school can be experienced just for fun. He says: “Not all SbS members want a career in the arts. Many just enjoy the recreational side and value the experience of doing their very best in memorable and fun productions, forming long-lasting friendships along the way.”


Training West End stars Stage by Stage has an incredible success rate in preparing students for work in the arts and entertainment industries. Former students have taken leading roles


in Mamma Mia, Oliver!, Singing In The Rain, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Hair in the West End. Others have appeared in national


tours of Fiddler On The Roof, Beauty And The Beast, South Pacific and Great Expectations. Former student Ben Aldridge starred as Daniel Parish in Lark Rise to Candleford whilst Rose Reynolds is shortly to open in Titus Andronicus for the
