AFS NEWS AFS Research Reveals Theory

of CGI Casting Skin Formation AFS-funded research has identified two compet-

ing mechanisms for compacted graphite iron (CGI) skin formation that leads to graphite degradation—an increased austenite layer and magnesium depletion. Tis breakthrough in understanding flake skin formation is an important step to unlocking the full design potential of CGI. Research work was designed to develop the knowledge

required to improve and ultimately eliminate the skin quality of CGI castings and generate data on its impact on the static mechanical and fatigue properties of CGI, as well as on the efficiency of shot blasting in improving these properties. Te research capitalized on the experience in the characterization of casting skin accumulated in the Virtual Solidification and Casting Laboratory (VisionCast) at Ohio State Univ. Extensive experimental work provided critical data

required to understand and eliminate casting skin forma- tion. Te developed correlations between process variables, casting skin quality and mechanical properties provide the impetus to further expand the applications of CGI. During Phase I of the research, the mechanism for skin formation and test specimens design was validated. Te final research was outlined in two papers by Sarum

Boonmee and Doru Stefanescu of Ohio State Univ., and presented in April at the 117th CastExpo’13 in St. Louis.

Casting Industry Speaks

Out in D.C. Metalcasters spread their message to the U.S. Congress at the 2013 AFS Government Affairs Conference, held May 1-3, in Washington, D.C. Tis year, Congress and the White House have announced plans to focus on deficit reduction, a revised ozone rule, a crystalline silica regulation, combustible dust, an overhaul of the tax code and a wide variety of EPA and workplace rules. Metalcasters met with congressional personnel to discuss the industry’s position on these plans. Tax Reform: Te metalcasting industry supports reducing

corporate and individual tax rates for manufacturers. Te Regulatory Process: AFS asks members of Congress

to support the Sunsine for Regulatory Decrees and Settelements Act of 2013 to improve the federal rulemaking process. EPA Regulations: Te U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) has recently produced multiple regulations that are a concern for the metalcasting industry, including subject- ing facilities to the Subpart UUU requirements on units used solely for the reclamation and reuse of industrial sand. Investment in Water Infrastructure: AFS urges

Congress to support smart financing approaches to address America’s water infrastructure challenges by lifting the volume cap on private activity bonds and supporting the Sustainable Water Infrastructure Investment Act and Water Resources Development Act.
