METHODOLOGY

Welcome to the IFLR1000 Energy & Infrastructure Sub-Saharan Africa Guide.

The Sub-Saharan region has been of increasing interest over the past years, with energy and infrastructure work driving this growth. To capture the diversity of services on offer we have looked at the Africa practices of international firms, the pan-regional offering of firms based on the continent and the local capabilities of firms.

There are two key challenges when approaching this topic at a regional level: the first is the diversity and range of countries and legal systems within the region and the second is the large number of specific disciplines and skills required in handling the variety of work that falls under the bracket of energy and infrastructure.

The Energy & Infrastructure Sub-Saharan Africa Guide hopes to present lawyers and firms in a way that reflects the diversity of services offered across the region, in addition to the specific disciplines within the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Research

The results of this guide are based on a questionnaire survey of law firms active in energy and infrastructure and a series of interviews with law firm partners – from both international and domestic firms – and in-house counsel active in the African market. We have also used other sources of information including transactional statistics provided by dealogic.

The Guide is divided into five chapters: ‘International Firms’, ‘South Africa’, ‘Nigeria’, ‘African Hub Countries’ and ‘Other Jurisdictions’. Within each of these chapters, we have ranked leading firms as either ‘Highly Recommended’, ‘Recommended’ or ‘Notable’. Editorial material within each chapter is ordered alphabetically and each profile is accompanied by statistics that provide a brief summary of each law firm’s key activity in 2012.

Recommendations of law firms inside the guide are based on interviews with leading partners active in the market across the region and interviews with clients, lawyers and non-lawyers, put forward by international firms. This is also supported by case evidence.

Additionally, we have listed individual energy and infrastructure lawyers at the end of each chapter who were recommended consistently as reputable and effective lawyers within their field. The individuals are listed with the specialisms that they were regularly recommended for.
