In a bid to get the nation gardening, the HTA, Sunday People newspaper and TV gardener David Domoney have launched a competition entitled Cultivation Street. The Sunday People announced its intention last month to get communities across the UK gardening together to transform residential areas. It is also hoped the competition will help generate plant sales and ensure garden retailers are at the heart of the action.

Domoney, who co presents with Alan Titchmarsh on ITV1’s Love Your Garden, says, ‘This is the Chelsea Flower Show of the UK’s streets, where communities of neighbours who share a passion for gardening can create a sense of pride in where they live. The HTA Marketing Committee has drawn up a brief for a national promotional initiative, scheduled for delivery next year, to get people thinking about, using and enjoying their outdoor space. double-page spreads to the competition, and many of Trinity Mirror’s regional papers will follow its lead.

products and experiences and garden centres are well placed to deliver these. If given enjoyable and memorable experiences people are more likely to make return visits and purchases.’
