Nursery notes with John Adlam Expert advice on maintaining and presenting your plants in June

Top tips for June

l Warm, dry periods will encourage spider mite numbers. Control with combinations of predators and sprays.

l Ash leaf sucker feeding causes leaf edge curling and purple discoloration; check for 3mm-long bluish-green insects. If seen, spray with Decis, Dursban WG or Hallmark WZT (EoA 2008-2944).

l Irrigate during cooler periods of the day to avoid leaf scorch on soft foliage. l Reduce CRF amounts by10%on newly potted short-term crops to avoid root damage this summer.

l Watch for ring spot virus (distinctive yellow spots with dark centres) on Dahlias spread by aphids.

l Shade eucalyptus growing under protection to prevent oedema–corky patches on leaves – in warm, humid conditions.
