Relying on a Powerful Network to Get Ahead Jennifer Goodale, Former Capt, USMC New MOAA Member

As an active duty Marine Corps officer, Jennifer Goodale found the transition from military life to mother to civilian employment far more challenging than she anticipated. “I just assumed that people would open their doors to someone who successfully served in uniform, and that the transition would be seamless. I couldn’t have been further off the mark.” After taking a couple years off to raise her daughter, she reached out to MOAA and received valuable advice from fellow officers concerning networking, résumé preparation, and planning your future.

“As a Marine, you have access to incredible mentors. And although you retain some of those relationships when you leave active duty, it would really be nice to have a mentor who has gone through the same steps; this is where MOAA’s role comes in.”

“When I submitted my résumé for review, I thought it was fairly well polished,” she continued, “meanwhile, I failed to include the fact that I deployed twice during my time in the Marine Corps!”

“MOAA has a vested interest in ‘taking care of their own’ and will go to great lengths to prepare you for this transition. They highlight the importance of networking, offer you perspective, and provide resources to navigate you through this journey.”
