Answers for Our Future Patty and Patrick Horan, CPT, USA (Ret)

Getting to the Right MOAA Members Since 2010

“My husband suffered a gunshot wound to the head while serving in Iraq in 2007. When our medical board decision was presented to us, I couldn’t understand the math. It included Army retirement, VA compensation, and this promise of combat-related special compensation (CRSC). I consulted at least five members of the Army and DoD staff involved in the board process. To my dismay, none of them could give me a straight answer about how CRSC was calculated. Next I turned to the Web. I couldn’t find a clear- cut answer there, either. My anxiety was growing; we only had a few days to concur or non-concur with our findings, and I was totally in the dark. I decided to give MOAA a call, in the hopes their benefits department could give me some guidance. An hour later, MOAA sent me a detailed breakdown of CRSC and how it would affect my husband’s retirement. What a relief! It was almost impossible to decipher what our monthly income would be in retirement. Thanks to MOAA, we were able to make smart decisions about our future based on reliable numbers they provided.”
