feet first
Feet, love them or loathe them, we all have to admit they have their uses, but despite their exposure to constant wear and tear, they are often neglected until the sun begins to shine hinting at the first signs of Summer.
According to The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists of Ireland, ‘our feet are our main mode of transport, carrying us on a journey of 128,000 kilometres in a lifetime.’ With this in mind, it’s little wonder that our feet are often left feeling a little worse for wear.
But, with research showing that people are more likely to get their car serviced than have their feet checked by a qualified professional, it should come as no surprise that more and more of the population experience some type of foot complaint, whether that be athlete’s foot, blisters, calluses, dry cracked skin and discoloured or unsightly nails.
And it’s such an easy trap to fall into – after what seems like a never-ending Winter of stuffing my feet into socks and shoes and hiding them away, even I must admit I’m guilty of neglecting my feet, but with a Summer holiday on the horizon I’ve decided to take control of the situation and finally put my feet first, giving them some much needed TLC, which got me thinking about the plethora of ways in which a salon could help.
From simple maintenance pedicures and marketing ‘treats for feet’ services through to the more comprehensive pampering packages, including dead skin removal, softening of hard skin and the shaping and treatment of the
toenails, with just a few simple steps (no pun intended) it’s possible to expand or revive your treatment menu to ensure pedicures are high up on your clients’ list of things to do.
Boost your income
One way to encourage your clients to keep coming back for more is to offer a course of pedicure treatments – just like you would probably prescribe a course of facials – after all it’s likely to take more than just one session to give your client’s feet the attention they deserve.
“Get the clients into your pedicure chairs by offering them a series of treatments at a special, promotional price, [for example] buy five get one free!” suggests Lydia Sarfati, Repêchage CEO and Founder.
“Having them pay before the service is good for your business for a number of reasons. First of all, the services are paid for up front. Second, your client has a different mentality when they come in for their next appointments. They have already purchased the service, so you if you’re able to get them to purchase more services or retail items, to them, it doesn’t feel like they are breaking the bank every time they come into the Spa.
“For example, if your client comes in and purchases a pedicure, chooses to upgrade for reflexology and then decides to take the retail foot cream with her, she will be spending, in total, a lot of money out of pocket. But, if she has already paid for her pedicure services before she comes in, she is only paying for upgrades the day of the service, so in her mind, her trip to the Spa isn’t costing very much,” Lydia adds.
Of course, once your clients are already in the pedicure chair it’s much easier to offer additional services, such as a scalp or Indian Head Massage, mini-manicure, and waxing services for those clients who may be getting ready for their Summer holidays.
Whatever approach you take, remember that you need your clients to feel as if they are walking on air when they leave your salon because if they don’t they will have no reason to return, but if they do they’ll want to come back time and again.
