IN APRIL 2013 YOUR EDITOR wound up with an interesting scheduling predicament. With an NRHS board of directors meeting in Cincinnati on one weekend and the Center For Rail- road Photography & Art conference in Lake Forest, Ill., the next, it didn’t make much sense to drive back to New Jersey between trips. Thus, my brother Bruce and I left the Queen City and circled south into West Vir- ginia before striking out for the heart- land. The trip provided an eclectic mixture of old and new as we tracked down classic depots and signals while getting some of the most modern mo- tive power that’s out there leading trains. RIGHT: Like the spirit of the C&O, the Norfolk & Western also lives on in the Mountain State. Even though the use of coal in the U.S. is on the decline, export coal is beginning to take off, keeping Norfolk Southern busy on the Pocahon- tas District. A coal mine at Keystone, W.Va., forms a backdrop as C40-9W No. 9444 heads west with plenty of power trailing on April 8.
