NORTHERNUTAH IS HOME to several railroad museums and attractions within close prox- imity to the Golden Spike National Historic Site (see the feature on page 40). At Ogden, the Utah State Railroad Museum occupies the main floor of Union Station (below), for- merly used by both Union Pacific and South- ern Pacific. Several of its displays have a Promontory connection, including an ornate safe (bottom) used to house the original Golden Spike for much of the 20th century (bor- rowed to the museum in 2011, it currently houses the 1969 Utah Centennial Golden Spike on loan from the state treasurer’s office). Also exhibited are timbers from the 1904 Lucin Cutoff, which included a 12-mile trestle that spanned the northern end of the Great Salt Lake. Outdoors are several steam and diesel locomotives, many of them of UP and SP lineage. In front of the depot is a monument to the Golden Spike erected in 1951. Brigham City’s 1907 Oregon Short Line depot has been reopened as the Historic Brigham City Depot Museum. Inside you’ll

find displays of railroadiana, and outdoors there is a steel Union Pacific caboose on ex- hibit. The depot is also home to the Golden Spike Association, whose volunteers have performed in the Golden Spike Ceremony reenactments at Promontory since the late 1950s. Nearby at the Box Elder County Court House is a monument, dedicated in

line. The tracks between Corinne and Lucin were removed during World War II, leaving in place only the short segment be- tween Corinne and Brigham City (now operated by Union Pacific). Near the end-of-track at Corinne a section of the original 1869 Central Pacific depot has been preserved by the Corinne Historical Society, which plans to restore it in the coming years (the freight section of the depot survives as part of a gas station in town). The Golden Spike Heritage Foundation owns the abandoned UP and CP grades between Corinne and the border of the GSNHS, and hopes to eventually relay 28 miles of track and offer train rides to historic Promontory Summit. – JEFFTERRY
