showcase his candid photos of an industry in transition.
The final presentation may have indeed been the best of the conference. Wes Carr brought to us the fascinating world of “rail- road monikers,” the artistic chalk scrawls seen on freight cars from coast to coast. From the early examples of “Bozo Texino” and “Herby” to the more modern “Colossus of Roads” and “Freight Bandit.” Like the hobo signs of the Depression era, each moniker carries its own meaning, its own style. Clips and phrases associated with each scrawl are like railroad haikus. After this presentation, I know I’ll be watching passing freights for some of these practiced marks. To draw the conference to a close, editor of
Trains magazine Jim Wrinn conducted a panel on railroad journalism. In attendance were columnist Don Phillips, and associate editor Matt Van Hattem from Trains, editor of the Union Pacific Historical Society’s Streamliner Mark Entze, columnist Alexan- der Craghead and editor Steve Barry of RAILFAN & RAILROAD. This annual “Conversations about Pho- tography” is always an uplifting experience for me, where I feel I have had my creative batteries recharged. An entire weekend of being exposed to great creative work and having excited conversation with colleagues and mentors alike is well worth the price of admission. Ever since my first visit, I was most impressed by how friendly and wel- coming everyone is, and how everyone is ea- ger to share and encourage the creative en- deavors of anyone who shares a passion for railroading. Next year’s conference May 16- 18, 2014 (so as not to conflict with the open-
ing of the exhibit at the Chicago History Mu- seum next April). Mark your calendars and head to the Windy City next spring, you won’t be disappointed. Visit www.railphoto-
art.org for more information. —O.M.V.
On the Way to CRPA Wile Otto was riding the train to Lake For- est for the CRPA conference, I and my broth- er Bruce were heading the same way via au- tomobile. I had a board meeting for the National Railway Historical Society in Cincinnati the weekend before the CRPA conference, and I figured for the amount of gas money it would cost to get from Ohio back to New Jersey, and then turn around a day later and drive to Chicago we could sim- ply get a couple of motel nights and spend time on the road. We backtracked from Cincinnati to the mountains of West Virginia for three days, with the first two spent looking for Norfolk Southern heritage units on the ex-Norfolk & Western. We were rewarded greatly, as the units painted for the N&W and original NS were working as a team on a helper set, and another helper set had the Lehigh Valley her- itage unit. From the N&W, we headed a bit north to the former Chesapeake & Ohio and spent a quite busy day there (once things started rolling), primarily to get the last of the classic C&O signals. It was on to Chicago from there via Toledo and Kalamazoo. The full sto- ry of the trip can be found in our digital edi- tion, beginning on page 58. You can add a digital sub- scription to your paper sub for only $10.00 a year — call our office for details.
