Rockhill Trolley Museum
ACQUIRES LIGHT RAIL VEHICLE: The Rockhill Trolley Museum (
www.rockhill
trolley.org), the operating entity of Railways To Yesterday, Inc., plans to acquire a 1981- vintage U2 Light Rail Vehicle formerly used in San Diego, Calif., on the San Diego Trolley. These vehicles were constructed by Siemens- Duewag of Dusseldorf, Germany in 1981 for the first new-generation Light Rail system in the United States and have served well for three decades. The vehicles have been main- tained to a very high standard and are in ex- cellent condition. Unlike many vehicles from colder climates, the cars have never been ex- posed to operation on streets treated with de- icing chemicals.
Silverton Northern
COLORADO SHORT LINE REVIVAL: The San Juan County (Colo.) Historical Society has obtained a 99-year lease from San Juan County on 2.5 miles of County Road 22, which follows the former Silverton Northern narrow gauge railroad right of way. The railroad was torn up in 1942 and its equipment went to the White Pass & Yukon. Part of the route follows the Animas River though a short canyon. The group ultimately plans to re-lay track from property it owns near the Powerhouse Indus- trial Park to the Little Nations Mill in Howardsville, which it also owns. But for now, the historical society plans to build an initial few hundred feet of track near the powerhouse
Classic EMD’s Replace GE Power on A-OK
THE ARKANSAS-OKLAHOMA RAILROAD has replaced its General Electric B23-7s with four ex-BNSF Railway (née-Santa Fe) GP30s and a chopnosed, former Southern Railway GP35. Alco-trucked GP35 No. 4510 (above) was purchased through broker Sterling Rail; it previously operated on the Idaho Northern & Pacific, while BNSF retired Nos. 2402, 2411, 2442, and 2443 last year and sold them to dealer Larry’s Truck Electric in Ohio. Nos. 2442 and 2443 and the 4510 were sent to Tulsa, Okla., to be painted at the Tulsa-Sapulpa Union Railway shops.
as a “demonstration project.” The group has acquired about a mile of rail and is working to raise $7500 to purchase crossties and other track material. The Historical Society owns the former SN Silverton enginehouse, which is home to the City of Durango’s Denver & Rio Grande Western 2-8-0 No. 315, which was re- built by and is operated by the Durango Rail-
road Historical Society. It also maintains the Old Hundred Gold Mine and the Mayflower Gold Mill, both of which are open to the pub- lic. The mill is located on the section of rail- road that will be restored. Eventually, excur- sions will be operated.
Stewartstown
FUNDRAISING GOAL IS IN SIGHT: As of May 1, 2013, the Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad had amassed about $300,000 of the $352,415 the group needs to satisfy the lien against the railroad held by the Bucks County Historical Society and the estate of George Hart. Spokesman Kenneth Bitten said, “We have been very encouraged by the number of people who are willing to commit funds to sav- ing this amazing piece of York County history. Many of them have agreed to provide loans for a minimum of five years secured against the assets of the railroad. Others have decided to purchase stock and some have decided to make tax-deductible contributions to the Friends. We believe that a final push will get us over the top.”
SunRail RRMPA Roundhouse Design is Approved
THE RAILROAD MUSEUM OF PENNSYLVANIA’S NEW ROUNDHOUSE design has been approved by the Strasburg Township Planning Commission and complies with the Railroad Her- itage Zoning District guidelines. The 16,000 square foot steel, glass, and brick structure will house six Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives which are currently stored outdoors: M1b Mountain No. 6755, K4s Pacific No. 3750, L1s Mikado No. 520, E6s Atlantic No. 460, H10s Consolidation No. 7688, and B6sb switcher No. 1670. The museum hopes that the new roundhouse will “recapture a bit of the magic that once existed when the PRR’s historic collection was stored at the Northumber- land, Penn., roundhouse in the 1950s and 1960s.” The turntable and pit will also be refurbished and fenced. Construction is expected to begin next year and to be completed in 2015.
IT’S DA BOMB: The Florida Department of Transportation has signed a $195 million, ten- year contract in which Bombardier Trans- portation will operate and maintain the Sun- Rail commuter system, which is expected to begin service out of Orlando next May. Bom- bardier’s responsibilities will include opera- tion; dispatching; maintenance of rolling stock, facilities, and track; and customer serv- ice. Bombardier will also supply 20 bilevel coaches which will be delivered this spring, while MotivePower, Inc., will provide seven rebuilt 3000-h.p. EMD locomotives. They will be equipped with MP36-style streamlined cabs to provide improved crew protection. The “new” power may be rebuilt using former MARC GP40WH-2 cores.
