Engebretson, who had spent his entire career in the metal building industry, joined Therm-All in 1988 and was a key contributor to the company's success. A member of NIA and MBMA energy code committees, Engebretson was recognized as one the industry's leading experts on energy codes and insulation systems. A long-time, respected fi gure in the metal building insulation industry, Engebret- son’s death is a loss for the Therm-All family and the industry as a whole. He was preceded in death by his parents and

He is survived by his sons Scott, Andrew (Nina Hanson), and Matthew; siblings Alan (Marge), Gail Engebretson, Marcia Engebretson (Jane Bidwell); Mark's fi ancé, Joanie Blanchar Tyler and her four daughters, Hailey, Hannah, Maggie and Lillie, and many loving friends and co-workers.

drops to 14.7 percent in March The construc- tion industry unemployment rate fell to 14.7 percent in March, down from 15.7 percent in February, according to the April employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor. The nation added 18,000 new construction jobs in March. Year-over-year, the construction industry workforce has expanded by 2.9 percent, or 162,000 jobs. March SIMA import

permits down 3 percent Based on the Commerce Department's most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Insti- tute (AISI) reported that steel import permit applications for the month of March total 2,541,000 net tons (NT). This was a 3 percent decrease from the 2,609,000 permit tons re- corded in February but up by 4 percent from the February preliminary imports total of 2,441,000 NT. Import permit tonnage for fi nished steel in March was 2,012,000, up 11 percent from the preliminary imports total of 1,819,000 in Febru- ary. AISI to develop new unifi ed cold-formed steel

seismic design standard On March 14, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Standards Council approved the development of a unifi ed cold-formed steel seismic design standard that will create a new standard: AISI S400, North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Struc- tural Systems. This new standard will provide a platform for the growth of new cold-formed steel seismic force-resisting systems. It will be developed and maintained by the AISI Committee on Framing Standards' (COFS) Lateral Design Subcommittee. AISI currently maintains two standards that

address the seismic design of cold-formed steel assemblies: AISI S213, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing–Lateral Design, which addresses the design and installation of cold-formed steel light-framed shear walls, diagonal strap bracing (that is part of a structural wall) and diaphragms to resist wind, seismic and other in-plane lateral loads; and AISI S110, Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Systems–Special Bolted Moment Frames. These two standards are maintained under separate committees, which has complicated the development and approval process and created confusion for users. The new AISI S400 standard will include all of AISI S110 and just the high seismic portions of AISI S213. The remaining

NFRC accredits fi rst lab to conduct

NFRC 202 test procedure The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has accredited Architectural Testing Inc., of Fresno, Calif., as its fi rst laboratory to test "NFRC 202: Procedure for Determin- ing Translucent Fenestration Product Visible Transmittance at Normal Incidence." This procedure, which was approved by

NFRC membership in 2012, provides a method for measuring visible transmittance (VT) at normal incidence for translucent panels. With the accredi- tation of the fi rst laboratory able to test using this procedure, manufacturers of fl at, diffusing prod- ucts that were not able to test for VT using simula- tion or a spectrophotometer, are now able to obtain a VT rating on a whole product.
