KITCHEN DISASTERS

by Canadian Red Cross W

ould you know how to prepare tasty and nutritious meals for you and your family if there was an emergency and you didn’t have

fresh food, running water or electricity for 72 hours?

Disasters can happen any time. The Red Cross advocates

that families should have an emergency preparedness kit in their homes so that, if needed, they can sustain themselves for 72 hours. And, of course, every disaster kit should contain non-perishable food.

As part of an annual fundraising with Wal-Mart stores

across Canada, the Red Cross hosts a Disaster Dining Challenge. Contestants have 30 minutes to assemble a dish using some food items recommended in an emergency preparedness kit. To make cooking conditions similar to a disaster situation, no electricity or tap water can be used. Disaster Dining Challenges are a fun way to remind

families to be prepared for disasters. The Red Cross recommends families know the risks in their communities, have a plan to deal with any potential emergencies and have an emergency preparedness kit. Check out some of the disaster recipes on the following

pages and visit http://redcrosstalks.wordpress.com for more!
