BIG PICTURE H

Communicating Macro-Ideas on Foo by Oxfam Canada

ow do you communicate the many complex reasons that the global food system is broken while making clear that change is possible? This is the powerful

purpose of Oxfam’s GROW campaign. While explaining the problems, we propose solutions, like supporting small-scale farmers, tackling climate change and reducing food waste.

The global food system is buckling under an

array of intense pressures: climate change, ecological degradation, population growth, rising energy prices, growing demand for meat and dairy products, and competition for land from biofuels, industry and urbanization. Women’s lack of access to land and other basic resources increase each of these pressures. Oxfam’s infographic depicts the multilayered

issues that contribute to world hunger and provides statistics that are easy to remember and can spark dialogue. Every night one in seven people go to bed hungry – not because there isn’t enough food but for reasons like waste, climate, and poverty. Oxfam’s GROW campaign has a powerful message:

another future is possible, and we can build it together. Decisive action around the world could enable millions more people to feed their families and prevent catastrophic climate change. Citizens, consumers, producers, communities, social movements and civil society organizations are demanding change – shifting public policy and business incentives through the decisions they take and the choices they make.

// Oxfam is an international confederation of 17

organizations networked as part of a global movement for change. Working in almost 100 countries to build a future free from the injustice of poverty, Oxfam has been responding to food crises for 70 years. Learn more at www.oxfam.ca
