Sipakapa, Guatemala

“Agriculture is our Art, it’s what we know” says Ovideo, “gold is of no value to us, but our land, our families, our culture — these are things that we value greatly.” The indigenous residents of Sipakapa know that their ancestors have developed and refined their knowledge of how to cultivate the land for generations. Sipakapa, Guatemala

A 2005 referendum in Sipakapa resulted in 98.5% of the population rejecting the expansion of a nearby gold mine.
