2013 NORCECA


• Summer Ross, who helped Pepperdine win a collegiate sand national championship in 2012, has enjoyed a successful youth and junior career in FIVB events. Her first full season as a pro was scheduled to begin with Brittany Hochevar. Ross’ biggest challenge would be to get in enough FIVB events to have the opportunity to accumulate points.

• USA Volleyball released its schedule for the 2013 USA Volleyball Junior Beach Tour and included 30 tour stops (see page 48). The USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championships will be held in Hermosa Beach, Calif., on July 17-21.


• Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik, who had a strong domestic tour season in 2012, were primed to make a serious attempt to make an impact internationally. The pair have won nine domestic events together the last two seasons, including the two most recent Man-

hattan Beach Opens. Jen Fopma and Brooke Sweat were on the same international path and were registered to play in the Cayman Islands NORCECA tournament slated for March 20-25. The duo climbed the domestic ranks in 2012 with several top four finishes, including a second in Hermosa Beach.


• USA Volleyball created an opening for a new high-level position, director of Beach National Teams. The new position was being advertised in March. The new hire would be

responsible for developing and implementing a world- class coaching and perfor- mance structure for USA Beach Volleyball. The new staff person would operate out of USA Volleyball’s Hermosa Beach office.


• John Hyden, who has dominated the domestic front with Sean Scott for the better part of two seasons, was look- ing for a new partner. Scott was unofficially retired with the prospect of fewer domestic


events and no desire to travel abroad. Hyden re- mains one of the top defenders and best sideout players in the game even though he turned 40 last October.


• The AVP as of April 2nd had not yet released its 2013 schedule, but Donald Sun (entering his second year owning the beach volleyball brand) said there would be events in 2013. He was reluctant to announce a schedule until final details were worked out.





 



