Sunahara, Black join coaching staff of U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team

U

.S. Men’s Women’s National Volleyball Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly added two successful collegiate coaches to his staff to join him for the race to the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.

Reed Sunahara, who coached at Cincinnati for 12 seasons, and Tom Black the current head women’s coach at Loyola Marymount University, will serve as Kiraly’s primary as- sistant coaches.

Sunahara, who played men’s volleyball at UCLA, will join his fellow Bruin after compil- ing 11 20-win seasons at Cincinnati as well as serving USA Volleyball in several coach- ing capacities. Most recently he was the head coach for the U.S. Women that won gold at the 2012 Pan American Cup.

“Reed is all about success and standards

- he’s coached successful USA campaigns, and he headed a strong NCAA Division I college program for over a decade,” Kiraly said. “It’s a great benefit to the program that he has joined our staff. The U.S. Women have achieved tremendous success by setting very high standards, and Reed will be invaluable to that process going forward.”

The addition of Sunahara was announced on Feb. 18 and was followed by the addition of Black on March 4.

Black has compiled a 47-44 record at Loyola Marymount in three seasons, includ- ing an 18-13 record in 2012. He spent the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games. As the consultant coach, Black primarily assisted in the training sessions at the USA National Teams Center in Anaheim, Calif. “Tom is a talented coach who is dedicated to being the best he can be at his craft every day, just as we ask our USA athletes to do,” Kiraly said. “Serving as a consultant coach during the last quad, Tom has already made valuable contributions in the USA gym. I’ve enjoyed getting to know and work alongside him, and this program is blessed to have his service as it aspires to reach heights never attained before.”

Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadren- nial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the

2015 season. He is thrilled to have the oppor- tunity to work under Kiraly after following his career closely.

“The Olympic Games is our sport’s biggest stage, and I am truly honored and humbled to work alongside Karch and his staff throughout this quad,” Black said. “Karch is an iconic fig- ure in our sport, but over the past three years I have had the privilege of getting to know him well while working closely with him as a coach, and there is no better person to lead this program toward the 2016 Games.”
