One area of the plant world that has seen a lot of research and discoveries of recent times, taking botanicals that one step further, is the stem cells. These are cells that carry the entire DNA gene expression of the plant and can morph, or differentiate, into other cell types to help the plant regenerate. This makes them very handy in skin care products, where they can often mimic the body’s cells.
Stem cells can differ slightly from traditional botanicals due to the ways in which they are cultured - first of all the plant is cut, which triggers callus tissue and cells revert to de-differentiated cells, becoming stem cells, which can then be used in stem cell technology, according to Dr Sam.
He adds: “The meristematic cells are cultured in a laboratory setting. There, the concentration of phelnylpropanoids – active substances created in response to injury or trauma – is multiplied in these cells by 1,000 times or more. As the stem cells are cultured in this manner, their chemical purity is also enhanced.”
Often used in anti-ageing products, when the cells are applied to the skin, they work to trigger self-renewal in human skin.
