Obituary: Jim Hopkins : 43 OBITUARY Jim Hopkins Peter Spencer I

t is sad to report that the longest serving member of the Coventry Branch of Warwickshire Beekeepers’ Association, Jim Hopkins, died in May 2013. He will be remembered for his support of the branch, serving as its secretary for ten years, and his enthusiastic contribution to association activities including public shows, beginners’ training and demonstrations. Jim joined the branch in the mid-sixties and then emigrated to Australia for five years. On his return, he re-joined, left his job and trained as a teacher of craft at Canley College, Coventry.

Happiest When Using His Hands

As well as beekeeping, woodturning was also an important hobby to Jim. In fact, Jim was happiest when using his hands. Many Warwickshire members will remember his demonstrations making lifelike models of beeswax fruit – bananas, apples, oranges and pears – you could only tell they were made of wax when you picked them up.

Keen on Poetry

He was also keen on poetry and in addition to writing poems, he would often

read one at the Warwickshire County Harvest Festival.

Founder Member of the Honey Co-operative

He was a founder member of the Honey Co-operative which was formed in 1994 and served as its first chairman for around ten years.

Polystyrene Hives

Jim was continually looking at alternative ways of beekeeping and mishaps or failures did not deter him. After a visit to Denmark, to learn about the Danish way of beekeeping including queen rearing and using plastic hives, he tried his hand at making a polystyrene hive. However, the polystyrene he used was not dense enough and the bees slowly thinned the walls down from the inside.

Will be Missed by Many

There is no doubt that Jim was one of those characters of beekeeping who will be missed by many of us.

The photograph shows Jim helping to demolish the old Coventry branch apiary cabin at Garden Organic, Ryton, near Coventry, in 2006. ¤
