Houseboating 101: Tips for Smooth Sailing
■ Familiarize yourself with your houseboat — before you leave home. Plan to watch videos about operation; choose the size and model of ship; and learn about your destination.

■ Don’t overpack (closet space is tight), but do bring everything you’ll need onboard. Once you sail away, you won’t see civilization again until you head home.

■ Fresh water is limited. There’s plenty for the necessities: drinking, showering (keep it short), and washing dishes. But you’ll need to conserve; otherwise, you might have to return to the marina for a refill.

■ Want to explore the lake? It’s a lot easier (and cheaper) to get around in a “tagalong” ski boat or Wave-Runner, also available for rent.

■ Learn to use the radio. If you find yourself in an awkward situation, you’ll want to call for help.

■ If you’re heading somewhere that looks a little tricky or too narrow, don’t go there. If you’re heading somewhere that looks a little tricky or too narrow, don’t go there.

■ Most houseboats use 8 to 10 gallons of fuel an hour while cruising. Even while docked, the generator uses up to 1 gallon of fuel an hour. Those fuel charges add up, so factor that into your costs.
