Department of Labor (DOL) data indicate returning Guard and Reserve troops have high unemployment rates. Employers know reservists are different from active duty veterans because they are subject to recall to active military service. Beyond employer recognition under the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program, what initiatives, if any, are under consideration to engage and reward employers for hiring and retaining members of the Guard and Reserve?
Unemployed veterans strike a chord with the American people, so in November 2011, as a result of the Guard and Reserve high unemployment, we launched an employment initiative program called Hero2Hired (H2H). H2H, in partnership with the VA, the DOL, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Army Reserve Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces, is working to support Guard and Reserve servicemembers seeking employment, many of whom placed their civilian careers on hold for military duty.
The placement of 56 contracted employment transition coordinators working with 4,900 [ESGR] volunteers ensures local support for both servicemembers and employers. H2H provides employers direct access to our National Guard and Reserve servicemembers through an easy-to-use Web portal. Since its launch in December 2011, H2H has signed up 56,261 job seekers and 7,803 employers. We’re very proud of these important programs. We continue to acknowledge that many employers go the extra mile to support their employees [who are] serving in the National Guard and Reserve. ESGR presents a wide range of DoD employer awards to acknowledge their contributions, including the Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award, Above and Beyond Award, Pro Patria Award, and Extraordinary Employer Support Award.
