«NutritionNOTES»
HAMBURGERS DON’T HAVE TO BE JUNK FOOD. They can be very nutritious because of the high protein, B vitamin, and iron content of most meat.

When selecting ground beef for your burger, it’s wise to select a leaner type. Lean meat is more expensive, but you will recoup much of the cost by not losing as much fat in the cooking process. If you prefer preformed burgers, read the label. Oftentimes, these patties include salt, broth, and other seasonings.

Alternatives to ground beef include all types of ground meats, from turkey to chicken, pork, lamb, veal, and even seafood. These can lend some variety to a cookout. Try a Greek-style lamb burger with eggplant or a well-herbed chicken patty.

Many vegetarian burgers also come in exciting flavor combinations, from carrot to black bean.

TRICAREUPDA+E
EFFECTIVE OCT. 1, TRICARE Prime service areas will be limited to a 40-mile radius of a military hospital, clinic, or base closure site. The primary impact of this modification results in changing from TRICARE Prime to TRICARE Standard. Each of the 170,000 affected beneficiaries will be notified by TRICARE. Active duty servicemembers and their dependents as well as TRICARE For Life beneficiaries are not affected by this change. There is the potential for an exception for retired servicemembers, their families, and TRICARE Young Adult beneficiaries to remain in Prime if they reside within 100 miles of an available primary care manager and sign a drive-time access waiver.

Music Helps Calm VA Hospital Patients
William Congreve’s observation that “music has charms to soothe a savage breast” is proving true at the Fresno, Calif., VA medical center, where live music in the hospital’s waiting areas is helping to calm waiting patients.

“We saw live music as a way to provide better service to our patients and their families, especially in some of our busier waiting areas, where we tended to have behavioral issues with patients because of the long wait,” notes Dawn Golik, chief of public affairs for the VA Central California Health Care System.

For Dr. Hani Khouzam, staff psychiatrist and medical director of the hospital’s chemical dependency treatment program, the music often helps make for a more productive appointment.

“If the music is very calming or reminds the listener of nature, it relaxes them and reduces their irritability,” Khouzam observes. “In that way, it makes my job a little easier by improving communication and interaction.”

According to Dr. Daniel Levitin, James McGill professor of psychology and neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and author of This Is Your Brain On Music: the Science of a Human Obsession (Penguin, 2007), live music improves mood by altering the listener’s brain chemistry.
