Customised solutions for capacitive technology


Molex is a global leader in membrane switch and capacitive user interface technology. Fully equipped reliability labs in each location qualify products prior to final tooling and can provide in-depth analysis.


Available options include discrete switches, slide switches, rotary wheels and combinations of tactile and not tactile products. Haptic, or tactile vibration, feedback and proximity sensing are additional options provided for integrated designs. Interfaces can be built on printed circuit boards, polyimide or polyester circuits for direct contact with curved surfaces. Molex’s unique backlighting concepts can be combined for seamless, innovative designs. Molex capacitive overlays and panels allow easy appliance cleaning and are available in a variety of cosmetic options and virtually any non-conductive material. Sliders, scroll wheels and full backlighting may all be incorporated to create a wide range of complete custom solutions. Molex is developing PEDOT- based technology, a conductive polymer that is becoming one of the most promising materials, with excellent electrochemical, thermal and solution-processing properties. A fully qualified, rigorous, automotive- standard PEDOT-based capacitive switch will deliver space and cost savings, above common Indium Tin Oxide solutions.

Depending on the specific needs of the customer, the interface can be designed to operate with single or multiple key presses and activated with a feather-light touch or a high level of force. The product can be designed to function with gloves and behind glass or even with a metal overlay; offering protection from water, dirt, contaminants and resistance to EMI. Molex capacitive designs incorporate and combine multiple switch formats and layouts.

Capacitive Fluid Level Sensors. These flexible circuit sensors easily mount to the outside of non-metallic containers and ensure precise fluid-level measurement. Multiple substrate options enable fully customised, low cost designs to meet a wide range of applications including medical devices, fuel tanks, pump controls and beverage dispensing. A design can use a traditional printed circuit board for a flat surface, or a thin, flexible circuit to accommodate curved surfaces or space-constrained applications. The sensor includes customised embedded software which can be configured for auto-calibration for easy installation, or manual calibration to maximise the accuracy.
