Revision: a survival guide for the family

Exam season is almost upon us, and many parents will be wondering how they can best support their children during the months ahead. Flora Howard asks experts for pointers

Y

OU’VE paid attention all year, you know exactly what your child- ren are studying and the names of their teachers. You’ve encouraged

and advised, but now exams are looming and the prospect of the Easter holidays and revision timetables are on the horizon. What should you, as a parent, be doing? The advice from our experts is to ‘keep

calm and carry on’. According to Emma McKendrick, headmistress of Downe House

42 School Life, Spring 2013

in Berkshire, Tom Maher, director of British Home Tutors, London, and Joseph Spence, master of Dulwich College, London, prep- aration is absolutely key, as knowing how to handle an exam is almost as important as the answers themselves. Schools will have been advising their students on effective preparation from the moment they started the course, but, during the next few months, it’s over to you to help them follow the advice set out opposite.

What can you do?

Emma McKendrick, Downe House ● Encourage, praise, support and act as a sounding board. These are stressful times for young people, and reassuring them that their best is good enough for you is very important

Tom Maher, British Home Tutors ● There is a good deal of evidence indicating the benefits of children sitting down and doing homework and revision with their parents. It should really mean going over what’s already been learnt on a regular basis to help them get to grips with new information

Joseph Spence, Dulwich College ● Brag, don’t nag. If it’s at all within the realms of credibility to do so, praise your children for what they’ve done more than you criticise them for what they haven’t done
