What do you think about country sports? Charlie I think shooting’s good as long as it doesn’t go over the top and put a species in danger. Anna I’m for it, but once, someone shot an owl by accident and my dad got really cross. Arthur Whenever my parents catch a salmon or shoot something, they always bring it back. We think you can’t just kill something for the joy of it. We go ferreting and shoot- ing rabbits—I’ve been taught to skin a rabbit and me and my mum made a rabbit stew. I think if you’ve taken its life, you should eat it. Will I think it’s okay, but you shouldn’t kill random animals. There are too many rabbits, though. And no one really likes pigeons. Freya I think field sports are immoral, but I haven’t been. My brother had been feeding this duck and then he shot it, and I really lectured him. You shouldn’t kill something that isn’t a threat. Jess If you shoot it, you’ve got to eat it, otherwise it’s pointless.

Who thinks England is the best country to live in? Six out of 12 said yes Arthur I’d like to travel later on and go some somewhere quite different, like South America. Minna I’ve only ever grown up here, and it’s been great, but there are lots of different opportunities in America. Charlie There aren’t that many opportu- nities in England—or so everyone says. I’d like to go to Australia. Jess England feels quite safe. I’d like to go to South Africa and see the wildlife, but it would be less safe in other ways. Will Britain is so diverse that you wouldn’t need to leave so much. Clara You take England for granted—other parts of the world are quite dodgy. Charlie You should go to as many places as possible. People see the poverty in Africa and think ‘wow’ and realise they are so lucky. Freya My mother experiences travel through work and I think that’s a good way of doing it. When I was eight, we took time off and went to New Zealand, Fiji and Australia in a camper van. I wrote a little diary. I look through it and see what I saw and thought about it.
