Innovative developments can be an indicator of a school’s priorities, and some of the country’s top institutions have commissioned some extraordinary projects. Katy Birchall inspects works in progress and those recently completed


Harrow School Facility Lyon’s boarding house


Opened September 2010


Lyon’s House is the first new boarding house to be established at Harrow since 1893. With high-quality, purpose-built accommodation, it also has environ- mentally friendly technology, including solar panels, a heat source pump and grey-water recycling ‘Lyon’s House is named after the school’s founder. It was built in order to enable all the other existing houses at Harrow to reduce to about 68 boys each, which has released space for common rooms and kitchens,’ explains headmaster Jim Hawkins.


Bryanston School Facility Boathouse


Opened June 2012


Designed by a former Bryanston pupil, Robert Adams, the new boathouse on the banks of the River Stour includes maintenance workshops, an ergo hall

Stowe School


Facility Equestrian centre Opened Autumn 2012


This riding complex has 20 loose boxes, an all-weather outdoor area, tack, rug and feed rooms and a 26-acre grazing paddock with off-road hacking through the Stowe estate. The cross-country course, designed by Capt Mark Phillips, will be completed this year Krista Price, the equestrian centre manager, notes: ‘Equestrian activity is proving to be a popular addition to the wide range of sports on offer at Stowe.’
