Health and the City T

rain with sports professionals such as GB Rowing’s Toby Garbett, Ex- England & Middlesex Cricketer Ben Scott or Nationally Ranked Powerlifter Sarah Franklin - available to coach you at City Athletic, the City’s newest fitness facility, in Trump Street, Cheapside. “The club offers the advanced performance coaching, sports training, equipment and rehabilitation facilities normally reserved for elite athletes, plus membership is strictly capped.” says Shaun Stafford, City Athletic Director and recent winner of The WBFF World Fitness Title.

At my first visit, Personal Trainer, Joe Brown, assessed my fitness and is working with me on specific training to support my yoga and mixed martial arts. The regular clients I spoke to all cited the quality of personal training and exclusivity as their reasons for joining.

I enjoyed Pilates, Wed 1.15pm, in Golden Lane. The hall is bright as it looks over the estate’s little rose garden and instructor Paula’s lovely, warm character makes the class a pleasure. Unlimited use membership is only £25/month or 3 work/college friends can join for £25/month. Barbican Life readers offer: try a free class each week for a month – valid 15 Mar-15 May 2013 - email to participate. ClassBaseEC1: 0207 697 9768 tweet @ClassBaseEC1

“Health is wealth, peace of mind is happiness, yoga shows the way” Swami Sivananda

aro McKenna, Yoga Teacher, founder of Energy Yoga and former Investment Banker, has just started a lovely, small, friendly Sivananda Yoga group in St Vedast Church Hall. Foster Lane, EC2V 6HH (by St Paul’s tube) Mon-Thurs 6.30-7.30pm. The space, adjacent to the church courtyard, is quiet, cosy and calming. Breathing is particularly important in this practice – along with traditional postures. It is energizing and relaxing.

Pricing is £60/month/unlimited or £10/class drop-in. Saro is also trained in pregnancy yoga.Find out more at

I have been trying some of the later evening sessions on Mondays to Thursdays, to de-stress and improve sleep. Margherita Dal Pra teaches an intermediate class on Tues 7.30-9.00pm. Her style is “a synthesis of Anusara bio- mechanical principles of alignment, heart- centered themes and the lineage and depth of knowledge of Tantric Hatha energetics in the Para Yoga® style”.
