2002 was one part open house, one part Curling 101, and one part fundraiser. Approximately 60 community members pre-registered, were as- signed to teams with experienced curlers, taught curling basics, and curled four-end games. For a modest entry fee, participants received a day of food and fun. A silent auction and raffle brought in additional funds, and by the end of the day, the group had more than $13,000, which was sent to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. As the second Curl for a Cure was being
planned, the organizing group searched for lo- cal breast-cancer-related avenues to receive pro- ceeds, but found that none existed. Another suc- cessful event and $14,000 followed; The Breast Cancer Research Fund was the beneficiary of most of those funds, with the remaining proceeds held to help offset the cost of organizing a local breast cancer foundation. Over the next year, the same group who created Curl for a Cure devel- oped a mission statement, articles of incorpora- tion and the bylaws of Pink Ribbon Advocacy, Inc. With a generous grant from 3M, paperwork was filed with the State of Wisconain and a 501(c)3 chartable foundation was born. strongly support the event and Pink Ribbon Ad- vocacy. Over the years, the event has brought in more than $100,000. The event format changes from year to year, and this latest Curl for a Cure included a full 16-team women’s bonspiel – the JugSpiel – in addition to the community curling and fundraising events.
