T e Gert Messing rink of New York (6-1) defeated North Dakota’s Dave

Messing (Hartsdale, N.Y.) and teammates Dennis Mellerup (Hoboken, N.J.), Donald "Bill" Nickle (Long Valley, N.J.) and Bill Peskoff (Glen Gardner, N.J.) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead aſt er two ends and the Jensen rink was leſt chasing. T e New York rink added four points in the sixth end to seal up the championship title. “Our team is very excited to win the championship,” Mellerup said. “We
are very honored to represent the United States and look forward to the Worlds this April.” T e Messing rink joins Margie Smith’s team representing the U.S. at the
2013 World Senior Championships April 13-20 in Fredericton, New Bruns- wick, Canada. Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O’Leary (Sil- ver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.), and Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.) went undefeated (7-0) to earn the women’s division title. T is is the second title for Smith and Dexter, who also won in 2011. T e senior championships are designed for athletes age 50 and above.
T e event began in 2002 at the national and world championship level. “We are just thrilled. We played tough all week and just tried to be pa-
tient,” Smith said. “T ere were some really good teams there. It is awesome to see women’s senior curling catching on.” Jensen (Bismarck, N.D.) and teammates Kent Beadle (Hudson, Wis.),
Roger Smith (Bismarck, N.D.) and Richard Maskel (Green Bay, Wis.) had been on a fi ve-game winning streak coming into the fi nal but saw their of- fense limited in the fi nal. T e U.S. men have won gold twice at the World Senior Championships
(2010, 2002) while the women's highest fi nish was bronze three times (2007, 2004, 2002). “We are very proud of winning the senior championship,” Messing said.
“We will work very hard in the next couple of months to be a strong repre- sentative at the Worlds.” ■
