// IN MEMORIAM Winnifred ‘Winnie’ Bloomquist
Winnifred "Winnie" Bloomquist, 88, passed away Nov. 8, 2012. Winnie
attended school and graduated from Bowesmont High School and received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. She married Harvey Bloomquist on Dec. 12, 1948, and moved to the
Bloomquist farm where they worked together raising various crops, live- stock and their family. Winnie enjoyed traveling with Harvey throughout the world. Tey celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1998, shortly before Har- vey passed away in March 1999. Winnie’s long life was filled with many varied interests and community
involvement. Curling was her passion. She was an active member of the Drayton Curling Club and the Graſton Curling Club. Aſter being selected for the 1976 Scots Tour with the U.S. Women’s Curling Association, she served as a delegate to the USWCA board and as president in 1987-1988. Winnie was instrumental in starting the USWCA Friendship Tour for women curlers in the U.S. and Canada that continues today. She also served as a North Dakota-elected director on the USCA board for many years and served as USCA president in 1996-97. Winnie was one of only two women to have been president of both the USCA and USWCA. Winnie traveled to many bonspiels, curling championships, and World Curling Federation events in Canada, Sweden, Scotland, Switzerland, and Japan. Winnie is survived by her children, Laura, Priscilla, Tim (Kim) and Dan
(Dawn) and seven grandchildren. Her two rescue dogs, Snowy and Bitsy, also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Winnifred; her
brothers, John and Harold; sister-in-law, Eleanor; her sister, Eleanor and brother-in-law Bob; and her beloved husband of 50 years, Harvey. A note about Winnie by David Garber
Winnie Bloomquist was a successful USCA president. She was also suc-
cessful as a friend and mentor. Outwardly soſt-spoken, Winnie was firm when the occasion called for resolve. She had a disarming smile, utilized a wry humor, and related to people with direct warmth. I had the pleasure of working with excellent leaders during my tenure with the USCA; Winnie was one of them, smart, savvy, and fun, tough when the subject required. I spent a pleasant hour in Poo’s Corner in the 1990s, on the way to Winni-
peg for a business trip, where Winnie and I were to meet with the redoubt- able Ray Turnbull. I quickly noted a large antique globe for sale. Winnie and I waltzed around a price, exchanging lots of wry! It was clear I wasn’t going to get that globe for cheap. We leſt further negotiations for my next stop in Drayton. Of course, that visit was not destined to happen. Besides, my wife advised me that, my collector’s urge notwithstanding, there was no room in our house for more globes. n
