WEIRBULLETIN | FEBRUARY 2013 AND FINALLY … The Weir Riders

Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, Weir Minerals North America (WMNA) is located in one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the USA. A number of employees at the facility are dedicated cyclists, the harsh winter not withstanding.

The WMNA cyclists have organised, together with their families, to bring awareness to important causes. The Weir Riders is the result.

Established in 2012, nearly twenty team members have committed to participate in at least one fundraising bicycle ride each season. Charitable rides for this past year included support for the American Diabetes Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Alzheimer’s research. The Weir Riders raised nearly four thousand dollars in total.

Non-riding co-workers also participate, without riding miles and miles of Wisconsin roads, by purchasing a lunch made and served in Madison’s staff lounge. The

response has been incredible; with friends and co-workers supporting these lunches to raise additional funds. The Weir Riders mission is to promote a healthy lifestyle among Weir Minerals’

employees, families and friends while participating in local charity bicycle rides for the benefit of individuals and communities. The Riders’ mantra? Life is about the journey – enjoy the ride!

Community project transforms station underpass

Students from Todmorden High School in the UK joined with

employees from Weir Minerals Europe to transform Todmorden’s railway station underpass. The project was the result of a new

community initiative launched by Weir Minerals Europe, whose European headquarters are based in the town, in conjunction with the High School. Under the ‘Weir Minerals Community Challenge 2012’ the business offered to donate £2012 to a local community project developed by teams of students with the support of a mentor from Weir Minerals. Several ideas were brought forward to

a panel of judges – which included Weir Minerals Europe managing director Tony Locke and Todmorden News’ editorial director Tim Robinson – who decided to award the funding to the railway

transformation project. Tony Locke, managing director of Weir Minerals Europe, said: “This initiative has given us an opportunity to further engage with our local community and work together on a project which will help make

the town a better place to live and work. “We were overwhelmed with the

passion the students have for their hometown and also the creativity and hard work they demonstrated in turning their plans into a reality.”
