Showcasing the valves, pumps and hydro offering at POWER-GEN International
Driving success at POWER-GEN International
The world’s largest annual forum for the power generation market provided
the platform for Weir Power & Industrial to showcase its valves, pumps and hydro offering to global power customers. Held in December 2012, POWER-GEN International in Orlando, Florida, USA attracted more than 20,000 visitors. It was a successful exhibition for Weir Power & Industrial, with the
division implementing a new approach to exhibitions to maximise investment. The results at POWER-GEN International were clear – with fewer booth staff, lead generation increased by more than 60% compared to the 2011 show, with a significant improvement in the quality of leads. These leads will be followed closely as the Division continues its drive for growth.
Weir Minerals has been providing engineering solutions to Anglo American for over a century. Embedding customer partnerships in shale plays
The embedded service technician programme is the latest initiative from
Weir Oil & Gas as the division continues to meet customer demands for convenience and quick turnaround in North American upstream markets. Weir’s Oil & Gas service centres in the Bakken, Permian Basin and Eagle Ford shale plays have established the programme, which provides enhanced service capability on the customer frac site

through a mobile refurbishment unit. Some of the division’s key customers
have agreed to build or order the units for their sites, offering the ability to provide an office, a test cell and perform iron refurbishment processes, allowing our skilled technicians to run the facility’s operations onsite with minimum service downtime. Weir Oil & Gas service centres are raising the bar with this service offering in key remote locations.
safety initiative with Anglo during their first global health and safety day on 26 November 2012. Graham Pascoe, Weir Minerals’ divisional health, safety and environmental manager, highlighted some of Weir’s health and safety achievements and initiatives, including Mfowethu (our brother’s keeper) and the Hands and Fingers campaign. The Mfowethu initiative has been particularly successful in demonstrating dangers in the workplace and the potential consequences of poor choices and actions. Mfowethu emphasises Safe Start principles and serves as a reminder throughout the facility to think and act responsibly in everything we do. Statistics show that common injuries in manufacturing operations are to hands and fingers. This promoted a focused campaign to emphasise the importance of protecting hands (e.g. wearing the right gloves for the task; not touching moving machinery; being aware of the hazards associated with kinetic energy, etc.). With South Africa’s diverse cultures and host of languages (11 official languages), dance is integral to cross-cultural communication. As such, Weir Minerals Africa employees choreographed a safety dance which communicates the Safe Start principles. Passionate about safety, some of the foundry team (arguably one of the potentially most hazardous environments within Weir) shared the safety dance with Anglo, culminating in everyone learning and joining in. This has provided the inspiration for a similar initiative at Anglo’s mine sites to drive and improve their health and safety awareness.
