Nailing the trends

With the January sales now nothing more than a mere memory, it’s likely that your clients’ thoughts are turning to their Spring / Summer wardrobes, and what better way to help update their look, than with perfectly polished nails in this season’s hottest new trends.

The catwalks for Spring / Summer 2013 saw hundreds of models strutting their stuff with a variety of fashionable fingertips to complement their outfits. For the most part it was a tale of two halves, from light pastel and innocent colours through to heavier textures and metallics.

Keep it simple

On the lighter side of the catwalks, models wore nudes and pastels which were painted either as a single solid colour or used two complementary colours to add a modern twist to the classic French manicure.

Designers, such as Jenni Kayne, for example, teamed up with OPI to decorate her models’ nails with a simple nude polish and a pop of bright yellow on the smile line. Meanwhile, CND Artsist Shelena Robinson created beautiful lilac coloured French manicures for Angel Sanchez at NYFW.

Shine on

On the heavier side, the catwalks saw designers like Jason Wu still indulging in darker hues, but also looking to nail wraps to provide a metallic edge to their models’ outfits as seen in the Calla Spring / Summer 2013 show at New York Fashion Week.

“Metallics are continuing to shine in 2013 partly because there are so few nail products that can truly deliver a real metallic finish,” reveals celebrity nail artist Lisa Logan. “Decorated nails have become a new form of accessory, and can complement or even take the place of jewellery on the hand.”

The textured touch

Textured, three-dimensional nail fashion will also continue gaining momentum this year according to Lisa, who recently created dozens of stunning and unique textured nail fashions for a recent Italian Vogue cover shoot. “Nails are the new darling of high fashion,” explains Lisa, “And customizing your nails by adding glitter, crystals, or other decorations

enables you to express your own individual fashion sense.”

What’s your accent?

One of the other big trends forecasted for Spring / Summer 2013 is ‘accent’ nails. “Accent nails have started to catch on fire, they are so hot this year!” Lisa exclaims. “Using one colour or design for all your nails except for one ‘accent’ nail on each hand or foot is the new way to show your fashion savvy and individuality.”

So is there a right way and a wrong way to wear accent nails? “There are very few rules with accent nails,” explains Lisa, who often creates custom accent nails for her clients. “Accent nails are about showing your individuality, but that said, there are a couple of points to consider:”

• Decide which fingers you want to use as an accent. “The most popular fingers to use for accent nails are the pinkies, the ring finger, or the thumbs,” says Lisa, “but there is no rule, and you don’t even have to use the same finger on each hand.”

• “Keep the accent nail complementary or in the same colour family. “Just like anything else in your ensemble, you do not want to clash,” says Lisa. “If you decide to wear an emerald green or rich red colour on your nails, then metallic gold would be a good choice for your accent nail.”
