“Treatment packages in salons are very important when trying to draw in some business”, explains Audrey Heffernan, Educator for Hennessy Hair & Beauty. “The more appealing the package is the better the chance you have of selling your treatment packages.”

The skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system (the system which protects the body from damage, including hair and nails). Its purpose is to serve as a ‘waterproof cushion’, and protect the deeper tissues, excrete wastes and regulate temperature.

It is also the site where sensory receptors detect pain, sensation, pressure and temperature, as well as providing vitamin D synthesis when exposed to sunlight. So it’s important that this hard-working, vital organ is treated with respect.

Too often body treatments are considered by clients just for aesthetic maintenance, such as waxing or spray tanning. What you need to encourage your clientele to do is embrace the treatments you can offer which help keep the skin on the body healthy and therefore in maximum working order.

Of course, the added side effect of these treatments is that your client will also feel fabulous during and after the treatment. Body treatments can be a wonderfully pampering experience, hence why they are perhaps seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, so it’s part of your role to educate clients to the benefits of regular body care and how this can be built into other treatments you offer.

Choosing your

treatments You may already offer massage on your treatment menu but how can you expand on this and what treatments should you be offering as part of body treatment packages?

“Try to pick treatments that complement each other, taking into account what the client expects and wants from your [salon or] Spa,” say Irish seaweed specialists Voya.

So what are the key aspects of body care in the salon? Organic skin care expert Virginie Claire says: “Exfoliating should always be performed in conjunction with any body treatment as it removes the excess build-up of dead skin cells so that the pathway for active ingredients reaches their destination and full potential. It leaves the skin clear, soft, radiant and canvas like so that following applications are fast acting and precise. Ingredients [could] include Apricot kernels, Sea Salt, Shea Butter, Peppermint or Mandarin.”

Virginie continues: “For slimming, oils, serums and gels can now be successfully applied and they will penetrate with petrissage movements to break down adipose tissue and smooth the skin. Fluid retention will be will be decreased due to stimulation of the blood and lymphatic circulation and the skin will be toned, smooth and revitalised. Ingredients [could] include Red Vine, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Pine, Camphor or Mint.”

If you have clients for whom slimming is not a concern, Virginie recommends: “Instead of slimming, nourishment can be applied through massage using body oils or body butters with ingredients such as Wheatgerm, Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Orange to name but a few. This will be firming, stimulating, clearing, soothing and highly regenerative.”

Virginie adds: “Masks are fantastic to use after a massage to push in all the active ingredients and further soften, nourish and brighten the complexion. They can be removed

and the body moisturised or some masks can be left on to penetrate for a longer lasting effect.”

Lydia Sarfati, Repêchage CEO and Founder, adds: “Come Spring, clients are looking to detox and get back into shape. Get your clients back in the Spa with great detox packages and hydrating skin care that will have them glowing from head to toe.”

What’s more, you need to make your clients aware of what you are offering – you may already have a wonderful body treatment on your menu that your clients are simply unaware of. “Clients who visit the salon for regular facial skin peels may not be aware that full body peels are available,” explains Anne McDevitt.

“Profound Skin Care advocates initiating the new season with a combi treatment - offer of a facial and body peel with a complimentary hand or foot treatment included. This will help kick start the client’s look in readiness for the up-coming Spring / Summer trend of radiant skin for a more natural look.”

Anne adds: “When clients experience the long lasting benefits of a facial quality cosmeceutical peel on the body, hands and feet, they are more likely to return for more.”

Plus there are also added extras that will help encourage your clients to return time and again.

“A fantastic idea is to provide clients with ‘A Gift with Experience’ – give your client an at-home care product, like the Repêchage Seaweed Body Cream, free when they book a series of three or more,” says Lydia. “It’s a perfect way to introduce your clients to the product and increase benefits of their service at-home.”
