and clients When it comes to carrying out treatments in the salon and using chemicals, it’s important that you and other members of staff are aware of the risks to both yourself and the client too.


Registering with the correct people and carrying out the compulsory tasks mentioned previously in this article will help you to keep yourself and your staff safe, but you must also remember to consider your clients too and their safety on your premises – after all, a bad client experience won’t do your business any favours when word gets out!


This is also where Therapy Insurance should be considered. Whilst it is not compulsory, it’s definitely something you shouldn’t push to the side as one of those things that you’ll eventually get around to. “Having insurance is important for any business, for a variety of reasons,” explains Lydia Sarfati, President and Founder of


Repêchage. “Whether someone slips in your Spa and injures themselves or has an adverse reaction to a treatment, it is important that you’re prepared.”


You might want to make sure that the insurance you go for covers you for Public Liability Insurance, which pays damages to members of the public for death and injury or damage to property or possessions; Product Liability Insurance, which covers any products you retail or give away that cause a reaction; Professional Indemnity Insurance, which protects your business against claims for loss or damage made by a client or third party if you make a mistake or are found to have been negligent; and Medical Malpractice / Treatment Risk Insurance, which is a professional negligence by action or inaction by a health care provider in which the treatment provided falls below the accepted standard of practice in the medical community and causes injury or death to the client / patient.


When it comes to offering more medically associated treatments, such as dermal fillers or laser / IPL treatments, it’s also worth checking with the Health and Safety Authority as to whether these are regulated or require you to carry out certain actions in order to offer them as a treatment. You will also need to make sure that you are covered for any such treatments on the therapy insurance too.


Áine has also advised that currently there are no regulations in place covering the use of sunbeds in the salon; however at the time of going to press, there has recently been a petition in Ireland to have regulations covering sunbeds. “A bill was passed last year and we are currently awaiting legislation to be drawn up on this.” Therefore, if you offer the use of sunbeds in your salon, this is something you should be keeping an eye on.


Hygiene


In order to prevent the spread of disease, hygiene and sanitisation should be something that you’re constantly on top of and that your staff should be keeping a keen eye on too, carrying out good practice.


“Proper sanitation is essential for both you and your clients’ health and safety,” says Lydia. “I stress sanitary practices to all estheticians and salon owners that cross my path. It is something I am relentless about. It doesn’t matter how good your service is, clients see cleanliness. It must start with this!”


When it comes down to health and safety in the salon, or any business for that matter, unfortunately it’s something that can’t be left for a rainy day and may seem like a bind, but it is something that has to be considered to keep you, your staff and your clients safe and your business thriving. Just remember, it isn’t rocket science, a lot of it is common sense, and if you’re really struggling you don’t have to struggle alone; there are lots of people and companies out there who will be able to help you and offer you guidance.
