As we head into the month of March, the tell-tale signs of Spring are popping up all around us from the new Spring / Summer wardrobes in the shops through to bright vibrant colours being introduced into make-up collections – so what exactly are the new trends for the season ahead?
“We are going to see plenty of fresh, ‘no make-up’ luminous skin, bold brows and cherry lips,” predicts Jane Iredale. “When brows are prominent little make- up is worn elsewhere except for cherry lips. Another key look is bare lips paired with plenty of eye liner and neon-bright shadows.”
Looking to the Spring / Summer 2013 catwalks of Donna Karan, Clements Ribero, Christopher Kane, Gucci, Versace and Christian Dior, we can see that jewelled eyelids, coloured liner and extra-long lashes are the key looks for the eyes.
Brows continue to be heavy and almost boyish thanks to some clever sculpting by the backstage MUAs at shows like Lenvin and Christopher Kane, meanwhile lips should be kept matte, but carry startling pops of colour such as bright pink to stand out against the pared-back beauty look of the face.
MUA Leanne Purcell, of Vanity Make-Up, agrees: “Colour pops anywhere around the eyes, whether it’s eyeshadow, eyeliner or even mascara, is set to be a huge trend this season! Bright green, aqua and pink eyeshadows featured heavily on the catwalks recently (Michael Kors and Kenzo), [but] this look won't be for everyone so you could tone it down a little using nude tones on the eyes and adding touches of colour with liner to keep the look on trend.”
Leanne adds: “One of my favourite looks for the upcoming season is big bold eyes – both [with] liner and brows! Big

both looks – therefore effectively doubling your profits!
brows have been everywhere for some time now but for S/S '13 we're combining the look with heavy eyeliner! Check out both Thierry Mugler and Giorgio Armani to see these looks on the catwalk.
“Finally…matte lips in coral, pink or red with barely-there eyes is another must for this season. Finish off the look with a touch of mascara on the lashes to ensure you keep all emphasis on the lips.”
From catwalk to
everyday Of course, nobody expects your clients to try and carry off all these looks at once – whilst the models may be able to get away with it for a short period of time on the catwalk, trying to recreate this season’s trends for an everyday environment requires a little more thought and make-up know-how and this is where you come in.
When it comes to carrying off the latest catwalk trends, it’s often simpler to pick just one element that your client would like to focus on. Jewelled eyelids can be a tricky look to pull off on a night out never mind at the office so why not encourage clients to go for a softer shade of the colour they love for daytime then advise them to layer the brighter colour on top for a more dramatic look after work.
Matte lip colour could definitely be worn during the day, but again it’s about choosing the right shade, not only for your skin, but also for the work environment instead of opting for fluorescent pink perhaps suggest a more subtle shade of pink during the day and then show them how to turn the volume up with a brighter shade for the evening and weekend.

When it comes to the base, recreating, fresh, beautiful-looking skin at home has become a lot easier for clients thanks to the introduction of BB creams, of course nothing can replace a great skin care regime but for those clients who require a little extra help covering the blemishes, introducing a BB cream into their daily make-up routine could be the answer.
Karen Deehan, of the International Institute for Anti-Ageing, explains: “BB stands for Blemish Balm and although they vary considerably, they tend to be marketed as an all-in-one product. A typical BB cream will act as a light foundation, moisturiser and sometimes an SPF. They are usually only available in one or two shades which self-adjust to the wearer’s skin tone.
“What sets BB creams apart from tinted moisturisers and foundations is their wealth of skin care benefits. The wide variety on the market are enriched with everything from Tea extracts and antioxidants to snake venom! Botanical extracts such as Grapefruit and Apple are particularly effective as they brighten the complexion and have a firming effect. The majority of BB creams also offer an SPF, but the level of protection does vary considerably between brands.”
Application is
everything Whatever look your client wants to recreate, it’s important they know how to apply the make-up correctly themselves when they are at home, especially when it comes to wearing bright colours. A good way of teaching this is to first apply the make-up to one side of your client’s face and then ask them to try and complete the other side.
Once you, and your client, feel confident they can go it alone at home, finish your consultation with a complete mini makeover in the colours they’ve requested. This will enable them to try out the look confident in the knowledge it’s been applied by an expert, which will help them lose any reservations they may have when it comes to recreating the look the following day by themselves.
