INDUSTRY NEWS Where’s Watty? L
ittle Watty, star of BSEEʼs regular competition, continues to travel the UK, exploring interesting places, admiring the built environment and considering how he can reduce his carbon pawprint. Watty does like to have his picture taken as a memento of his travels and BSEE readers are given the chance each month to guess where he has been photographed. The lucky winners each receive a cuddly badger for correctly naming the places or landmarks that Watty has visited! For those who have not yet made his acquaintance, Little Watty Baxter is the name chosen for the badger featured in the Baxi-SenerTec UK logo. The name Little Watty, short for Little Walter, is an apt choice because it alludes to the unit of output generated by combined heat and power technology. What some may not know is that Dachs, the name of the mini-CHP unit that is marketed in the UK by Baxi-SenerTec UK, is the German word for badger.
Competition This month Watty enjoyed a long trip to see an outstanding building design and a visit to the land of the brave set his whiskers quivering in anticipation. His destination was a complex building described as ʻgrowing out of the landʼ, which appealed to our little burrower. There were in fact several distinctive buildings involved, each with its own
characteristics. One in particular intrigued him, but to see it Watty had to waddle a right royal mile, looking for a can on a gate! But it was worth it. Built behind an existing facade, this building includes an impressive two-storey cantilevered structure that spans some 18 metres without any supporting columns. ʻWow!ʼ thought Watty, ʻThese people make their own laws!ʼ To be in with a chance of winning your very own cuddly Little Watty Baxter, simply look at the photograph and tell us the name by which the building that had impressed him so much is generally known – if you can! Please email your answers to:
trushtonthorpe@datateam.co.uk The winner will be chosen at random and will receive a cuddly badger. The closing date for this competition is 01 March 2013. You can also follow Little Watty on his Facebook page at

“My appointment as the Chairman of the DALI board is a great honour for me and
comes at such an exciting time for the organisation,” says Peter. “At the last board meeting we established a new structure for DALI with dedicated technical and marketing work groups. 2013 is set to be a strong year for the DALI standard – watch this space.” Peter has worked at Helvar since 2007 and manages the LED product ranges, including drivers. Lumicom’s 100% record
According to the Environment Agency, Lumicom was responsible for 100% of Category 5 luminaire WEEE collections within two consecutive quarters of 2012. It was calculated that within Q2 2012 Lumicom recycled 80.599 tonnes of identified Cat 5 WEEE and by the close of Q3 the figure had increased to 99.764 tonnes.
During a recent interview, Lumicom’s Membership Recruitment Manager, Simon Cook, reported that despite industry growth remaining fairly static, the company is very happy to announce that its 2013
target of 100 tonnes of recycled luminaires in a quarter has almost been achieved and signs show that the numbers are only going to grow.
WEEE Compliancy has been viewed with much scepticism since it was brought to force in 2007 but there is now overriding proof that Lumicom really does show significant returns by acting responsibly for its members. As the membership grows and more funds are raised through accurate EEE reporting, Lumicom aims to triple the amount of WEEE collected in 2013.
