Megaman provides a decorative touch

Lamps and reflectors from Megaman’s extensive decorative lamp range, including LED candles and LED GU10’s, are being used for a variety of applications in Coombe Abbey Hotel, a beautiful country house nestling within the UK’s historical heartland of Warwickshire. The use of Megaman lamps has enabled Coombe Abbey to maintain its energy saving ethos whilst retaining the old world charm and aesthetics of the interior decor.

Set in 500 acres of parkland, overlooking formal gardens and a tranquil lake, Coombe abbey was founded as a monastery in the 12th century and in the 16th century it became royal property. Now a four star country house hotel boasting 119 rooms, Coombe Abbey has been lovingly restored to its former glory by its current owners, offering a stunning venue for weddings, conferences and special occasions. The hotel, with its immaculate grounds and plush en-suite bedrooms, offers the perfect blend of luxury and intimacy. Michael Butler, part of Megaman’s technical team, worked closely with interior designer Yvonne Scott to conduct an energy survey of the site and suggest alternative lamps for use within existing fittings. Following the results it was decided that lighting in the hallways, lobby, bedrooms and landings should be provided by a combination of Megaman’s LED Candle lamps, LED GU10’s reflector lamps and LED dimmable classics.

Intimate illumination B

uilding energy management systems (BEMS) can play a central part in measuring, monitoring and managing energy use in buildings. With intelligent procurement, installation and application,

today's BEMS will

keep track of how much energy is being used in a building, where and why. Advances in technology over the past few years mean that more and more equipment can be included on the BEMS network, including meters, wireless sensors and a growing variety of smart building services equipment supplied with built-in controls that are compatible with many of the open system protocols such as LonWorks, BACnet and KNX.

In fact, building controls are reaching a stage where they can supply large amounts of very useful data on building performance. This information is rapidly becoming business critical, since it can impact on business running costs. One of the most important potential uses for this information is to inform and motivate staff about energy use, costs and the importance of energy efficiency.

More and more leading businesses, including large retailers such as supermarket giant ASDA and electrical retailer Dixons, are taking data from the BEMS and using it to educate and encourage their staff. They take this information just as seriously as they would their monthly sales data. That is because energy is a rapidly growing cost for businesses - and in today's tough market that makes energy an area for serious consideration.

Delivering data in a way that is understandable and usable is key. There is no point handing over huge amounts of data on kilowatt hours of consumption to staff who are not experts in energy or engineering. But showing simple week-to-week changes in energy use; or highlighting areas of a store where there are unusual peaks; or pointing out where heating or lighting is running unnecessarily provides useful and actionable information.

The BEMS not only provides a way to manage energy use; it also provides a way to manage occupants and their attitudes to energy. None of this has to be elaborate. Simple charts comparing energy use against time, or even against other buildings, can provide clear targets.

There is a saying in management that 'What gets measured is what gets done'. Leading businesses are finding out that simply showing staff how much energy is used, and putting a premium on being as efficient as possible, can make a huge difference to energy performance.

10 BUILDING SERVICES & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER FEBRUARY 2013

Mood setting was an important consideration because of the history of the hotel and the surrounding décor so high output LED’s were considered unsuitable. Because of this, 5W LED frosted SBC/SES Candles were utilised in the bedrooms and some public areas, 5W GU10 reflector LED’s

in the down lighters throughout and the bathroom corridors and 8W LED Dimmable Classics in the guest bedrooms to provide more intimate illumination. Throughout the facility, Megaman lamps have been incorporated in existing fittings to replace the existing halogen and filament lamps and provide a longer lamp life whilst reducing maintenance time and conversion costs. Another benefit was that this simple change of lamps caused no disruption to the day-to-day running of the hotel.

Megaman’s LED GU10’s emit three times less heat than the equivalent halogen lamps, produce 2800K for a warm, ambient colour temperature and have a long life of 25,000 hours. The LED Candle lamp resembles a central point light source and has been developed specifically to highlight the aesthetic appeal of crystal and chandelier fittings. It features a light-emitting position similar to that of the filament in an incandescent candle lamp which generates a sparkling effect to the surrounding fixture. Its unique ‘heat sink’ design allows for heat dissipation as the LED Candle omits considerably less heat than an equivalent incandescent lamp.

Another steaming spa from Hygromatik

The utterly blissful Champneys Spa in

Forest Mere, Hampshire, has recently installed the latest HeaterLine steam generators from Hygromatik as part of a refurbishment project to the female spa facilities.

The HeaterLine steam generator is designed for high steam output (it can deliver up to 45kg/h steam) and is perfect for steam rooms and spa applications. In the HeaterLine equipment, water is heated in a cylinder using an immersion heater to produce un-pressurised hygienic steam and is suitable for use with tap water, fully demineralised or softened water. The large volume, robust, stainless steel cylinder can be cleaned and reused and comes fitted with the SuperFlush cylinder flush system that automatically removes lime scale build-up for reduced maintenance. Champneys Forest Mere is an exclusive and glamorous resort spa where the emphasis is on quality and luxury.

The owners look to Hygromatik to supply a totally

reliable steam generator that will operate with minimum maintenance – Hygromatik was therefore specified for all steam generation equipment because of the manufacturer’s reputation for high quality equipment and after-sales care and support.

Stan Bartosz, Maintenance Manager at Champneys says: “Reliability is essential – we cannot have any of our facilities out of action, so the reliability of Hygromatik’s equipment is important to us. The technical support from the team is excellent and they are always very helpful in giving us advice on the best system to use.”
