BAXTER [Hall of Fame Class of 2003] For 43 years, Skippy Baxter’s smile
warmed the hearts of many at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena in Santa Rosa, Calif. To Bax- ter, the facility was home and its staff and those who skated there were extended fam- ily.
On Jan. 8, nearly 300 people gathered
on Snoopy’s Home Ice to celebrate the life of Lloyd Valdemar “Skippy” Baxter, who died on Dec. 18, 2012, at age 93. The celebration was hosted by the Baxter and Schulz families. Over the years, Baxter influenced many
lives, including that of Olympic champion Scott Hamilton. Upon learning of his friend’s death, Hamilton tweeted, “My heart hurts to- day. I just learned that Skippy Baxter, the first human to ever backflip on ice, has passed at the age of 93. 1 of a kind!” While not the first to execute a backflip
on skates, it’s no wonder Hamilton thought he invented it. Baxter, who said he executed more than 60,000 backflips, indeed made the

move famous. And it was Baxter who taught Hamilton his now-famous backflip in the 1970s at the arena. Hamilton, now an NBC Sports analyst,
returned to the arena last month to pay trib- ute to his friend. As one of the tribute’s distin- guished speakers, Hamilton asked everyone to close their eyes and think of a moment spent with Baxter. As he scanned the crowd, Hamilton said everyone was smiling. “That is Skippy’s greatest legacy,” said
Justin Higgs, general manager of Snoopy’s Home Ice. Neil Rose, a member of the 1930s’ Three
Rookies comedy skating troupe, regaled the crowd with stories from Baxter’s early
ice
show career. In a fitting tribute, 1978 World champion Charlie Tickner and Ice Follies/Ice Capades star Richard “Mr. Debonair” Dwyer performed on the ice. “Skippy really was a rock star of the skat-
ing world,” Higgs said, “but he led his life in such a gracious and humble way.”
