Smart devices push networks to the edge
W
ith Christmas bringing another leap in ownership of tablets, smartphones and other devices, new research from Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, suggests
that increasing consumption of video content on such devices will push the wired broadband networks that carry this traffi c to their absolute limits over the next decade. Bell Labs’s projections suggest that, by 2020, consumers in the
United States will access seven hours of video each day – compared to 4.8 hours today, and will increasingly consume this additional video on tablets, both at home and on the go. Signifi cantly, the research also points to a dramatic shift in view- ing habits, as consumers switch from broadcast content to video-on- demand services, which will grow to 70 per cent of daily consumption compared with 33 per cent today. T e projections also suggest a 12 times increase in Internet video content
as cloud services, news sites and social networking applications become more video based, and continuously accessible anywhere on tablets. Importantly, the study also highlighted how these trends will stretch the capabilities the residential broadband networks many service providers use today. As the delivery of video content rapidly moves from traditional broadcast TV to the ‘unicast’ delivery of personalized content to individuals, disproportionate pressure will be placed on the ‘IP edge’ of these networks.
Consumer engagement vital for smart meter rollout
lans for the installation of smart meters for millions of homes and businesses in Great Britain have taken a step forward with the publication of Government decisions on rules for consumer engagement, privacy, and security. Energy and climate change minister, Baroness Verma, said: “The
P
introduction of smart meters nationwide is of course an enormous challenge, representing a vast upgrade of our energy system, but with huge potential benefi ts for millions of homes and businesses and for Great Britain as a whole. “Let me be clear: the consumer comes fi rst. That’s why we are tackling issues such as privacy, security, consumer protection and communications now, working with industry and consumer groups to make sure we get this right ahead of the mass rollout.” Energy suppliers will be responsible for replacing over 53 million gas and electricity meters, involving visits to 30 million homes and small businesses. The mass rollout of smart meters will start in late 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in 2019. Sean Weir, Arqiva’s programme director, commented: “A compre- hensive consumer engagement effort is needed for the smart meter rollout. The smart metering programme’s success depends on a high level of consumer engagement, both before and after installation. Consumers will benefi t more from smart meters if they understand the opportunities to reduce their energy bills and change their energy use.”
