Apple gains: The latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows Apple has achieved its highest ever share in the US (53.3 per cent) in the 12 weeks up to November 25 last year, with the iPhone 5 helping to boost sales. In Europe, however, Android retains the highest share with 61 per cent of the market, up from 51.8 per cent a year ago. Dominic Sunnebo, from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, commented: “Apple has reached a major milestone in the US by passing the 50 per cent share mark for the first time, with further gains expected to be made during December.” Meanwhile in Europe, Samsung continues to hold the number one smartphone manufacturer spot across the big five countries, with 44.3 per cent share in the latest 12 weeks. Apple takes second place with a 25.3 per cent share while HTC, Sony and Nokia shares remain close in the chase for third position. Three agreement: Huawei has signed a managed services agreement with Three UK. Under the agreement Huawei will deliver service management and operations for Three’s core network in the UK, the transport network and the ICT applications. Huawei has selected TechMahindra as its ICT Partner to deliver the ICT applications management. Tech Mahindra, is a leading global system integrator, specialist provider of solutions and services to the telecommunications industry. Dave Dyson, chief executive officer of Three UK, said: ”The decision to select Huawei to manage core network operations follows a rigorous procurement process. We chose the partner that best met our requirements and which matched our long-term vision of how our network should be managed. This partnership is just one of a series that sees us enhance the capability of our Ultrafast network. The partnership means the existing team experience will continue to support the management of our core network.” MMS increase: Acision, the global leader in mobile messaging, has announced spikes in MMS traffic of up to 424 per cent over the winter holiday period – specifically on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Comparing data from different countries across Europe, North America, LATAM and APAC, Acision found a significant increase in the usage of MMS across the globe, particularly the sharing of video content. This demonstrates the enduring value of rich mobile messaging in mature and developing markets, regardless of access to mobile broadband and connectivity to social networks and content sharing applications. “This increase in the use of mobile messaging during the winter holidays is not entirely unexpected but it does confirm that MMS has shifted in our consciousness as a reliable way to reach loved ones with rich messages during this season”, commented Jorgen Nilsson, chief executive at Acision. “We put this surge down to consumers’ increasing desire to share rich content and special moments, stimulated by the global phenomenon of social networking, which has also been made easier by the growing popularity of smart devices and access to networking applications.”
