Modular electric actuators for Arab oil initiative A
UMA has won a petro-chem order for the manufacturer of modular electric actuators
with selection as the single source supplier of actuators for an Arab oil initiative. Work at the installation for Qatar Petroleum
de-gassing stations, located at the Dukhan field in the Arab D block, began in 1998. The gas recycling initiative is designed to enhance oil production and, over a period of two years, AUMA’s field devices for valve control were successfully installed as part of a retrofit and replacement programme. Exploration in the Dukhan region began
in 1935 and Dukhan field was the first to be discovered with oil of a commercial quantity. Over fifty explosion proof AUMA actuator combinations designed to aid process control at the scheme have been installed to date including multi-turn and quarter-turn actuators plus controls. supplier to replace other actuators at the project included expert local support and modular design for adaptability. Supporting AUMA growth in demand for its actuators in challenging applications such as the Dukhan contract, the company invests heavily in R&D. A recent advancement, specifically developed to aid safety critical installations, is a new module designed to provide enhanced Safety Integrity
Level (SIL) capability for the company’s electric actuation technology. The initiative enhances application of AUMA’s modular actuation technology in safety-related systems in the oil and gas industries. When devices are used in safety critical applications,
it is particularly important that they function correctly in the event of an emergency. Depending on the severity of a possible incident, different SIL levels are defined and evaluated according to the IEC 61508 standard.
Devices such as actuators include software and
complex electronics like micro-controllers – this makes it challenging to detect possible errors and evaluate reliability. Standard AC .2 integral controls offer complex
control functions, sophisticated diagnostics and feature an easy-to-use interface but, because they are based on software and complex electronics, they can only be used in SIL 1 applications. New AC .2 integral controls in the SIL version adopted by AUMA address this enabling use of the company’s actuation technology in SIL 2 applications. SIL 3 installations can also be supported, if designed in redundant architecture (1oo2). AUMA’s SIL initiative addresses complexity
issues: comparatively simple components in the company’s SIL module are adopted including transistors, resistors and capacitors, for which
safety figures are known. Should an emergency arise, only the simple logic of the SIL module is active - this takes over actuator operation and the more complex logic of the AC .2 in normal operation is bypassed. ●
