tere silver and blue. Then there were the six refurbished by ConnDOT that received the New Haven paint scheme that often showed up on the Hudson Line, and the pair that were painted in New York Central lightning stripes in 1999 for the 150th anniversary of the Hudson River Railroad’s arrival in Peek- skill. Alas, the NYC units had a very short life on Metro-North.

Metro-North still remains a favorite pho- tographic target, and since moving to north- ern New Jersey most of the system is within 45 minutes to two hours of home. Like most commuter railroads, Metro-North operates with locomotives on one end and cab cars on the other — unfortunately, with Grand Cen- tral Terminal’s bumping posts on the south end (and the desire to keep passengers from walking past noisy locomotives), all of the railroad’s power is on the north end of trains, making photography sometimes dif- ficult. Still, with Bear Mountain and Mood- na Viaduct and numerous bridges over streams and inlets, there are always new an- gles to explore. —S.B.

Harlem Line Rider Our Grand Central Terminal feature (page 28) was written by Emily Moser, who is quite the historian on Metro-North and GCT. Emi- ly writes the blog I Ride the Harlem Line, (www.iridetheharlemline.com). Among the features that have been on the blog recently are a station-by-station tour of every Metro- North station (yes, all 123 of them), shot with her panoramic camera. But perhaps most ambitious was a 100-photo essay on Grand Central posted as one photo a day for 100 days, ending on February 2 (the 100th

anniversary of the public opening of GCT). When not embarking on some massive

project, the blog’s regular postings include a observations while riding the train, com- mentary on graphic design and a host of oth- er often unusual and off-beat topics. When you get a chance, give it a look. You’ll wind up spending a lot of time looking through all the interesting Metro-North and GCT stuff she’s accumulated. —S.B.

Stockton Slide & Pizza Party If you are heading for Winterail in Stockton, Calif., this year, keep in mind that Railfan & Railroad and the National Railway Histori- cal Society will once again be hosting the Stockton Slide & Pizza Party on Winterail eve. The party will be held on March 8, with pizza served at 5:00 and the shows starting as soon as we get the all-clear from the Win- terail roadies that we can use the theatre (about 6:00-6:30). We expect to have our usu- al selection of informal slide shows — some digital, some multi-media and even some cardboard-and-emulsion slides. (If you want to present, we may still be looking for some 20-minute shows by the time you read this; send an e-mail to steveb@railfan.com if you are interested).

Admission is $10.00,

payable at the door, and it includes pizza, pop and the show. Come on out for an evening and get your Winterail weekend off to a great start. Proceeds benefit programs of the NRHS. See you in Stockton!
