streetcars and rapid transit cars, as well as many steam locomotives, an extensive oper- ation line and Indiana Railroad lightweight car number 65. Car 65 started the whole IRM effort in 1953. The man who initiated the birth of the IRM is the late Howard Odinius, who was a motorman on the Chica- go North Shore & Milwaukee interurban. Detroit Regional Transit Agency? If a reminder is needed, in the fall of 2012 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray La- Hood noted that Detroit is the only major U.S. city that does not enjoy a transportation authority that serves the urbanized area. Michigan governor Snyder and Detroit may- or David Bing are in serious discussion on
how to create the necessary agency. There is some talk of light rail service, as there has been for several years, as well as discussion about bus rapid transit. There may even be a good forum for reintroduction of commuter rail service. As is always the case, finding the money to do the job will be the biggest problem, especially in chronically fading De- troit. Thanks to Kenneth Borg for the news.
Collateral Advantage Sometimes it takes a big local event to get a transit improvement going. An example would be when Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics some years ago. The light rail system still growing in the Salt Lake City area is a product of the excitement and challenge of the Olympic events. Some people in central Indiana thought that the Super Bowl hosted in Indianapo- lis in early 2012 might lead to major tran- sit improvements. It was not to be. Howev- er, the zip line in downtown Indianapolis was so popular during the events around the big game, a rumor began that No- blesville and Fishers would be joined to Monument Circle by zip line. That has turned out to be untrue.
