HERRON RAIL VIDEO Since 1985. The Leader in Vintage Rail Video Quality Shooting With Limited Equipment
I always enjoyed the late Jim Boyd’s CAMERA BAG columns covering train photography techniques and principles. So when Editor Barry asked me if I could take over a revival of Jim’s column, I was thrilled! My photography experience goes back to around 1968, and includes everything from b&w and color film developing and dark- room printing, to experience with cameras ranging from APS to 35mm to medium for- mat to 4×5, to currently digital including scanning and using image processing pro- grams like Photoshop and Elements, and digital printing. In addition to nine previous articles in past R&R issues, going back to my first article in the January 1985 issue (“Coors — Brewed with Pure Rocky Moun- tain Spring Water and a Railroad”), more re- cently I wrote the DIGITAL HORIZONS column covering digital photography subjects. So I will be drawing on this 40-plus years of photography passion and experience for this new CAMERA BAG column which will pres- ent subjects applicable to both digital and film photography. Some columns will pres- ent the basics for good railfan photography, while others will delve more into practical and also fun trackside techniques. And some columns will cover “after trackside” topics such as processing of images in a computer,
and even occasional darkroom related topics. Thank you for reading this new CAMERA
BAG and if you have any comments or ques- tions, please contact me at nostalgicphotos@

TYPICALLY, MOST RAILFANS use a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex, or SLR for film) camera for photography. These cameras of- fer fast automatic or manual focus, automatic and manual exposure modes, fast shooting, high mega pixel sensors and a full range of sharp lenses to yield top quality train photos. Sometimes you may be faced with using a lower end camera, such as a small point- and-shoot (P&S) all automatic film or digital camera you use for family and vacation pho- tos. Perhaps to save space on a non-railfan- ning trip you take a small camera just in case you come across a good railroad subject. In these situations you may feel limited in what you can accomplish. Even the most current P&S models do not offer all the ca- pabilities of a SLR/DSLR, and older cameras can be downright inferior for many railfan situations. The good news is that, with prop- er use, some really nice photos can be had with these cameras. (While the following in- cludes examples of using APS and 110 film cameras for which film and developing may

Louisiana & North West brakeman Ralph Whitlockwaits by the switch as his crew member moves their engine out of the engine house on a foggy morning in McNeil, Arkansas in 1982. Despite the limitations of the small P&S (an Olympus XA) with limited exposure and focusing controls, by working within the capabilities of the camera a nice image was achieved in less than ideal conditions.
