SS Streakers R Us and Lee Ann Rust

Compete at NFR Women’s Professional Rodeo Association member Lee Ann Rust of Hawley, Texas, recently competed at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, finishing 11th aboard her Paint Horse, SS Streakers R Us. Last year’s WPRA Rookie of the Year, Lee Ann and “Harley” qualified for their first NFR as the 12th

barrel racer in the nation for 2012. Lee Ann and Harley made a good showing at the

Horse of the Year Title Overcoming a tumultuous year, Susie Has A Penny came back to win the United Professional Rodeo Association’s Barrel Horse of the Year title. Owned and ridden by Sidney Lee Forrest of Sulpher Springs, Texas, “Streak” started her 2012 season with a bang but was sidelined in March with severe colic that required surgery. Following a 90-day recovery, Streak returned to the

rodeo arena with Sidney, performing even better than she had before surgery.

“I was so blessed to just be on Streak,” Sidney said.

“She wasn’t even supposed to be alive, let alone better than she was before the surgery!” Battle scarred, Streak has proven that a bit of luck

runs through the veins lacing her palomino-and-white coat. The duo finished in second overall on the asso- ciation’s barrel racing leaders chart with more than $21,000 in earnings, and in October UPRA members voted Streak as the winner of the association’s Barrel Horse of the Year title. A second Paint Horse—Genuine Doc Barjet, a 2001

sorrel tobiano gelding owned and ridden by Trudy Hol- loway of Mineral Wells, Texas—also beat colic in 2012 and was included in the fan favorite voting for UPRA Barrel Horse of the Year. “Gee” and Trudy finished the year fifth overall with earnings of nearly $10,000. With a year beyond her wildest imagination in the books, Sidney is looking forward to an even brighter future with the mare. “I just filled out our WPRA [Women’s Professional Rodeo Association] permit and bought our WPRA

NFR. Their placings included finishing fourth in rounds one and two, and earning a total of $42,256. Their best time was :13.87 in round 10. Competing at the NFR was a long-held dream for the 54-year-old horsewoman. “A lot of people had dreams and goals when they

were young, but life happened and they didn’t get to them, but they look at me and see that it’s not too late. I get a lot of those people sending me messages like that,” Lee Ann told the Paint Horse Journal in December 2011. Bred and owned by Lee Ann, Harley is a 2002 brown

solid Paint-bred gelding by Scenic Symbol and out of The Sixth Sense (QH). To learn more about Lee Ann and Harley, read “Never Too Late” in the December 2011 Paint Horse Journal—subscribe or order back issues at phj.apha.com or by calling (877) PHJ-4-YOU.
