JIm Murray: Clearly, a gentleman of impeccable taste
Bible study
While a kind word from Jim Murray is always welcome, his glowing reviews of Society whiskies in 2013’s Whisky Bible had us jumping for joy. Awarding his coveted ‘liquid gold’ stamp to a slew of Society bottlings, here are a few of Jim’s highlights:
G5.3 EXTRAORDINARY TASTE INTENSITY “A fabulous cross
between bread
GRAIN
pudding and a well- aged Canadian whisky.” 33.116: HEATHER- SMOKED BARBECUED CRAYFISH “And what’s the peat doing all this time? Prowling like a proud lion.”
104.13: AN ANGEL FALLEN TO EARTH “If you are to buy only
one major whisky this year, make it this.” 73.44: OLD FRIENDS
WHISKY OF THE YEAR
REMEMBERED “A malt you will remember for a lifetime. Simply, and quite literally, Fantastic.”
128.3: CHESTNUT PUREE AND NEW HIKING BOOTS “This is, without question, world class.” 2.80: RIDICULOUSLY RICH AND FLAVOURSOME “like the most
voluptuous company you prefer to spend an evening with, this has a faultless butt.” 23.70: CAMPFIRE BY SEA CLIFFS “Stunning. Simply Stunning…!”
127.15: A JOSTLING JINGLE-BAG “There are a few seconds right in the middle of this which are as close to perfection as I have tasted this year…” 127.20: INVIGORAT- ING, EYE-WATERING, BREATH-CATCHING “If you wondered why we were ever given taste buds, now you know…” 126.2: PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON “Such a bottling shows exactly why for the last quarter of a century I have greatly prized this malt… Flawless.”
16.30: BARLEY SUGARS ROLLED IN ASH “Better than anything I have ever seen.”
An Australian welcome
The Society’s Australian branch has hosted a special tasting event with Brian Kinsman, master blender for William Grant & Sons. The tasting was attended by 70 people and included a great line up of Glenfi ddich whiskies, including a very special 20 year-old that had spent the last eight years in a rum cask, and which Kinsman had bottled especially for the event.
Pure poetry
We’re always impressed by the creative response of members at Society tastings, but the bar was comprehensively raised recently, with this beautiful Mandarin whisky ode, found written on the back of a menu. For those readers whose Mandarin is a little rusty, here’s a translation…
