The whiskies sampled…

CASK NO. 29.130

A CHINMEY SWEEP SMOKING A CIGAR

AGE: 24 years CASK TYPE:

Refi ll hogshead, ex bourbon

CASK NO.26.90 CAROL DE BEER This is

perfection in a glass! Nothing dominates or shouts out at you, it’s so well balanced. There’s a mix of sweetness

and smoke on the nose, a lot like sushi; there’s hints of smoked salmon and sweet sticky rice. It’s rich and oily, like sap from a tree. I’m surprised it’s as old as it is; it’s quite fi ery. There are subtle notes of TCP; again it doesn’t overwhelm the whisky at all. There’s also a plastic aroma to it -– but in a good way – it reminds me of the strong scent you get when you open a tub of tennis balls. This is defi nitely a whisky for Andy Murray!”

CASK NO.21.27 LEE ESLYN This one has a very unusual fl avour;

there’s a real sweetness to it but a kind of freshness that you wouldn’t expect. It’s like a thick slab of

dry fruitcake, with lots of sweet fruits on the nose. On the palate, there is a huge burst of citrus fl avours that really contrasts to the sugary caramel aromas. It’s a dry sweetness, a lot like the packets of dried bananas you can buy. Crayon sharpenings also come to mind; it’s got both waxy and dry qualities. There’s a tannic tinge to it too and a heavy wood fi nish, which isn’t surprising with its age. Its alcohol is still surprisingly strong, but it doesn’t need a drop of water added to it. A truly special whisky.”

CASK NO.29.130 LOUISE CRANE

Members Only

Three London members gather at 19 Greville Street to choose their favourite drams from the latest Outturn

PHOTOGRAPHY: DAVE PHILLIPS

This is really subtle for an Islay; those great medicinal notes aren’t too heavy or overpowering. It’s a dry, tannic dram, with a kind of smoke that reminds me of hemp oil.

There’s a real sweetness to it too, it’s like toasted, burnt caramel – a great mix of sweet and salty. It’s like stepping into a cheese shop full of huge blocks of Parmesan and Manchengo. And with a little water, like digging into a bag of cheesy crisps, almost like Cheetos! Pine needles and rubber are also revealed. I’m also surprised by the age of this one – it packs a real punch! This is a great whisky to fi nish the night with.”
