TMA Practice Consulting can perform audits monthly, annually, or quarterly. Audits are approved for 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. 4. Your practice is in an area without sufficient available pharmacies for electronic prescribing.

To claim an exemption, log on to

Medicare’s Quality Reporting Communi- cation Support webpage, http://bit.ly/ TlGUzb, to access the exemption form until Jan. 31. There are two more proposed exemp- tions in the 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule:

• Physicians who achieved meaningful use during certain e-prescribing ad- justment reporting periods; and

• Physicians who demonstrate intent to participate in the electronic health record (EHR) incentive program and adoption of certified EHR technology.

TMA will announce adoption of these additional exemptions when the infor- mation becomes available. Remember: You are automatically ex- cluded from the 2013 penalty if:

• You submitted at least 25 e-prescrip- tions in 2011 and reported them with G-code G8553.

CMS extends e-Rx hardship deadline

If you missed the opportunity in 2012 to claim an e-prescribing exemption to prevent a 1.5-percent penalty this year on all Medicare allowable charges, you now have a second chance. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services an- nounced it would accept new hardship exemption requests until Jan. 31 for one of the following four reasons:

1. You cannot electronically prescribe due to local, state, or federal law or regulation (e.g., you prescribe con- trolled substances).

2. You infrequently prescribe (e.g., fewer than 100 prescriptions between Jan. 1 and June 30).

3. Your practice is in a rural area with- out high-speed Internet access.

• You submitted fewer than 100 de- nominator-eligible claims to Medicare in 2012; or

• Fewer than 10 percent of your al- lowed charges between Jan. 1, 2012, and June 30, 2012, consisted of de- nominator eligible codes.
